Virtual Reality-Based Learning Environments for Students with Cognitive Impairments
Main Article Content
Abstract
The use of new technologies in learning has provided new opportunities of enhancing the learning process particularly to the cognitively impaired students. Traditional pedagogical methods are not typically accommodating of the different cognitive abilities of such students making them less interactive and incapable of succeeding in academic life. In the paper, a Virtual Reality (VR) based learning is proposed that will provide a holistic, flexible and inclusive educational experience. The structure includes significant components such as profiling of the learners, cognitive assessment, adaptive content delivery, interactive feedback and performance analytics to tailor learning. The study uses an experimental approach that entails the use of pre-test and post-tests to determine efficiency of the proposed system. The comparison is made between the learners who are taught the VR-based system and those who are taught in the conventional teaching methods. The assessment will be conducted using various measures such as learning outcomes, engagement, and effectiveness of personalization, usability, and behavioral measures. The findings reveal that there are more drastic changes in academic performance, rate of task completion and retention of concepts among learners who are subjected to the VR environment. The system also improves interactions, motivation and attention span and minimizes the levels of frustration. The results reveal the possibility of VR technology to revolutionize the field of inclusive education by providing multisensory and experiential learning opportunities and personalize the learning process. Although the suggested framework is facing some issues, regarding the cost, technical complexity, and accessibility, it offers a scalable, efficient framework of enhancing the learning outcomes of students with cognitive drawbacks. Future research opportunities involve incorporation of artificial intelligence to achieve more personalization and creation of cost effective VR solutions to be utilized by more people.
