Abstract

This study examined the knowledge, attitudes, practices (KAP), and perceived advantages and disadvantages of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) among first-year Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) students enrolled in the course "Mathematics in the Modern World" at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College. Using a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design, data were collected from 118 students through a validated survey questionnaire.

The findings revealed that students generally have a high level of knowledge and positive attitudes toward GenAI. They recognize its usefulness in simplifying complex concepts, providing quick access to information, and supporting academic tasks. Among the advantages identified, students highly valued GenAI's ability to explain difficult topics and deliver information efficiently. However, concerns were also raised, particularly regarding dependency on technology, reduced creativity, and the potential for misuse in academic dishonesty. Furthermore, the results indicated that students achieved a "Good" level of academic performance. A significant relationship was found between students’ knowledge and attitudes toward GenAI and their academic performance, suggesting that a better understanding and positive perceptions contribute to improved learning outcomes. In contrast, no significant relationship was observed between GenAI usage practices and academic performance, indicating that frequent use alone does not guarantee success. Additionally, the frequency of use was significantly related to KAP, highlighting the role of exposure in shaping students’ engagement with AI tools.

Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of promoting the responsible and ethical use of GenAI in education. It underscores the need to integrate AI literacy and structured instructional strategies to ensure that GenAI enhances learning without compromising critical thinking and academic integrity.
