Abstract

This study aims to describe project-based learning (PjBL) strategies from a humanistic perspective at the higher education level. The low ability of students to interpret poetry during the learning process is the main reason for conducting this study. Therefore, learning activities were designed in the form of humanistic-based projects. This study used data obtained from observations conducted during the learning process in 2022–2023. The data were analyzed using an exploratory approach based on the interpretation of meaning or content analysis. The findings revealed that the humanistic approach could increase students' learning motivation, considering that most students initially lacked motivation to study poetry. Furthermore, the study found that project-based learning (PjBL) could enhance students' learning activities, as demonstrated by their increased participation in asking questions and completing assigned tasks during the learning process. Finally, PjBL helped students understand the meaning or themes of poetry, as evidenced by their learning outcomes, which demonstrated their ability to correctly identify and explain poetic themes. The findings of this study can also be applied to literature learning in general.
