Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to examine the concept of "fear" from a thematic perspective within the Holy Qur'an so as to help define its linguistic and religious aspects and determine how it appears and where it occurs. Additionally, the purpose of this research will be to provide an overview of its positive spiritual and educational influences upon the individual and society.

Fear is presented as an integral part of the Qur'anic model of belief and individual growth. Fear has been described by the Qur'an in several ways (fear of God; fear of His punishments; fear in man due to his own nature; fear caused by trials and dangers). Praiseworthy fear causes people to be obedient and to avoid sin while blameworthy fear can cause people to become despondent or prevent them from accepting the truth.

The results illustrate the extent to which fear can have important effects on both the religious education of individuals as well as the spiritual lives of individuals, particularly the development of piety (Taqwa) and the growth of self-regulation and personal responsibility through self-control and by developing a balanced believer.
