Navigating Change and Stability: The Evolution and Enduring Strength of the Indian Constitution

Abstract

Constitution of any State, being the supreme legal document establishes various institutions, provides their powers and functions. It also enables, ‘people of nation’ to identify themselves as citizens and familiarises them with their role and responsibility in a constitutional setup. It is a mirror to their shared history and collective goals for the future. Therefore, it is essential that constitution is stable, providing citizens with a sense of, if not permanence, then certainty regarding their identity. However, being a living document, constitution also has to adjust with the changing times and accommodate the changing aspirations of the society. Thus, it is the right balance between the conflicting demands of change and stability that will ensure constitutional endurance. The Indian Constitution has endured for seven decades and has the potential to guide future generations as well. It is a masterpiece which has been carefully crafted out by its founding fathers. It is specific, inclusive and flexible, the three features adding strength to its design. However, in recent times, the constitutional values have been at risk of exaggerated political imagination and ambitions of the ruling government. This paper is a humble attempt to celebrate the defining moments of the India’s constitutional journey, its history, the reasons for its endurance.
