Abstract

Purpose. The study of Big Data in the training of Ecuadorian communicators in response to the 4.0 demand lies in how Big Data has influenced communication work and how higher education institutions are responding to these new demands. The general objective of the research is to establish and identify the Big Data domain in Ecuador. Methodology. It was developed in a mixed paradigm, which started from a bibliographic review, where information available in repositories and libraries was considered; 724 surveys were applied under a simple random sampling, and an interview was conducted that corresponds to seven Big Data experts. Results and Conclusions. The results revealed a diversity of approaches and levels of adoption of Big Data among professionals, highlighting the need for greater understanding and training in these digital tools. It was concluded that, due to the age range of the respondents, it is understandable that digital skills have not been considered in the curriculum of social communication careers in the country. However, given the evident rise of the Internet and the proliferation of technologies, it is imperative to update the curricular grids so that the contents respond to contemporary demands. Original contribution. Based on this research, studies could emerge that focus on the integration of Big Data as an integral part of digital skills in related degrees, which can address various crucial dimensions.
