The Role of Healthcare Professionals in Medical Laboratories, Pharmacy, and Radiology in Supporting Diagnosis and Treatment and Improving Patient Outcomes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Accurate diagnosis and safe, effective treatment depend on a chain of specialized professional contributions that extends well beyond the physician's clinical judgment at the bedside. Medical laboratory professionals, pharmacists, and radiology professionals generate, interpret, and safeguard the diagnostic and therapeutic information on which physicians and care teams rely. This paper examines the distinct and overlapping contributions of these three allied health disciplines to diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes within the Saudi healthcare system, situating the discussion within the Kingdom's Vision 2030 healthcare transformation agenda and its evolving regulatory infrastructure. Drawing on Donabedian's structure-process-outcome model, the National Academies' diagnostic process framework, and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative competency domains, the paper proposes an original integrative model, the TRIAD Framework, comprising Timely diagnostics, Rational pharmacotherapy, Imaging-informed decisions, Accountable interprofessional practice, and Data-driven feedback. The paper reviews the specific functions of medical laboratory scientists, clinical pharmacists, and radiologists and radiologic technologists; examines the governance role of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, the Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions, and the Saudi Food and Drug Authority; and considers the evidence linking these disciplines' contributions to measurable improvements in diagnostic accuracy, medication safety, and treatment outcomes. The paper concludes with recommendations for strengthening interprofessional integration across these three pillars of the diagnostic and therapeutic value chain.
