Vivat International and Its Mission for Humanity and Social Transformation in Indonesia

Abstract

This article examines the role of VIVAT International in championing humanitarian and environmental causes in Indonesia. It aims to highlight the transformative and religious character of this NGO in the pursuit of social change, while identifying its vision, mission, objectives, areas of focus, and operational reach within Indonesia. Data and information were gathered through document analysis and in-depth interviews, while analysis employed a qualitative approach, linking the collected data—derived from documents, media reports, and interviews—with the study's theoretical framework. The findings reveal VIVAT International as a transformative NGO that identifies and analyzes the structures and systems responsible for social and environmental issues, such as mining, geothermal projects, violence against women and children, the rights of indigenous peoples (particularly in Papua and Flores), and human trafficking. The study demonstrates that these issues stem from economic, social, political, and cultural systems and structures that are inherently exploitative and repressive, perpetuating poverty and environmental destruction. Through awareness-raising, advocacy, and empowerment, VIVAT supports affected communities in challenging oppressive systems and structures at both grassroots and national levels, while also amplifying the voices of the voiceless at the United Nations. All these efforts are undertaken in the spirit of a faith-based NGO dedicated to upholding human dignity and the integrity of creation.
