Integrating Augmented Reality into Education: Applications, Benefits, Challenges, and Opportunities
Main Article Content
Abstract
This review thoroughly explores the incorporation of Augmented Reality (AR) into the educational sector, focusing on its uses, advantages, obstacles, and future prospects across various fields. By superimposing digital elements onto physical surroundings, AR provides engaging and interactive educational experiences that boost spatial visualization, active learning, motivation, and teamwork. The review traces AR's journey from its initial concepts to sophisticated wearable devices, highlighting its transformative role in areas like medical education, engineering, architecture, science, mathematics, language acquisition, arts and design, vocational training, and fashion education. Although AR enhances student involvement and academic success by aligning with constructivist, experiential, and cognitive learning theories, its implementation encounters major hurdles such as technical limitations, high expenses, lack of faculty training, infrastructural challenges, content creation difficulties, accessibility problems, and ethical issues. Importantly, the review points out research gaps in less-explored domains like fashion education, long-term educational outcomes, teacher professional development, and inclusivity. Future directions focus on AI-driven adaptive AR environments, WebAR for increased accessibility, wearable spatial computing devices, collaborative multi-user AR platforms, integration of learning analytics, creation of discipline-specific content, and sustainable implementation methods. By compiling existing knowledge and addressing these gaps, this review offers a comprehensive framework for educators, developers, and policymakers to fully utilize AR's potential, promoting engaging, effective, and equitable educational experiences that cater to the needs of 21st-century learning.
