Conceptual Metaphors in the Song Lyrics of Blowin in the Wind by Bob Dylan (1963).

Abstract

This study investigates conceptual metaphors in the lyrics of Blowin’ in the Wind by Bob Dylan from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Grounded in Conceptual Metaphor Theory developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, the research explores how metaphorical language structures the representation of social and moral issues in the song. The study applies the Metaphor Identification Procedure proposed by the Pragglejaz Group to systematically identify metaphorical expressions in the lyrics. The analysis reveals four dominant conceptual metaphors: TRUTH IS WIND, LIFE IS A JOURNEY, PEACE IS A TRAVELING BIRD, and IGNORANCE IS BLINDNESS. These metaphors map abstract concepts such as truth, freedom, and social awareness onto concrete experiential domains including natural phenomena, movement, animals, and sensory perception. The findings demonstrate that metaphorical language in the song plays a central role in shaping its philosophical and socio-political message. The study further argues that these metaphorical mappings reflect the historical and cultural context of the early 1960s in the United States, particularly the social tensions associated with the American Civil Rights Movement and the broader geopolitical climate of the Cold War. By framing complex social issues through embodied experience, the song invites listeners to reflect on questions of justice, peace, and moral responsibility. The findings contribute to research in cognitive linguistics by demonstrating how conceptual metaphors operate within song lyrics as structured cognitive models rather than isolated stylistic devices. The study also highlights the pedagogical value of song lyrics as authentic materials for teaching metaphor and critical discourse analysis.
