Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of an extended English program backed by the English Access Microscholarship Program funded by the US Embassy. The intervention group comprised  of economically disadvantaged learners aged 13-20 with low proficiency in English, who were selected and enrolled into the English Access Microscholarship Program directly. Fifty participants engaged in after-school instruction and enrichment activities aimed at enhancing their language skills and addressing the identified gaps in their English language abilities. This study employs a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design.  The study assesses the impact of an extended non-contractual English intervention program on students’ language skills and attitudes towards other culture by comparing the outcomes of pretest and posttest. The data analysis involved comparing participants’ language proficiency scores before and after the intervention through statistical tests.  The findings showed significant improvements in participants’ English language skills, as well as positive changes in their attitudes towards other culture. In conclusion, the findings suggest that students can significantly enhance their linguistic skills through intensive intervention programs. These programs alleviate the burden of passing a formal course. Moreover, the English Access Program emerged as a catalyst, expanding students' perspectives and fostering a positive outlook toward diverse cultures by exposing them to interactive and immersive learning experiences.
