The Role of Medical Laboratories, Pharmacy, Medical Technology, Health Information Management, and Health Administration in the Management of Diabetes Mellitus: A Literature Review

Abstract
DM is a significant health issue worldwide and a multi-disciplinary approach is required for good diagnosis, treatment and long-term management. The aim of this literature review was to investigate the potential contribution of medical laboratories, pharmacy, medical technology, health information management and health administration to the enhancement of diabetes care and patient outcomes.
A narrative literature review was undertaken based on recent peer-reviewed research from the last five years (2022-2025). The literature reviewed was analyzed to identify the contribution of each healthcare profession towards the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and delivery of healthcare for diabetes.
The evidence reviewed shows that medical laboratories play a crucial role in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease at a precision level, and the provision of pharmacy services plays an integral role in optimizing medication therapy and ensuring adherence to it at the maximum level. Artificial Intelligence, CGMs, and telemedicine are examples of medical technology that aids in personalized care and clinical decision-making. While health information management supports integration and continuity of healthcare data, health administration ensures collaboration between multiple disciplines, quality enhancement, and the efficient utilization of health care resources. These disciplines collectively help achieve positive clinical outcomes, increase patient safety, and enhance diabetes management.
Finally, to provide holistic diabetes care that is centered around the patient, medical laboratories, pharmacy, medical technology, health information management and health administration must be integrated. With ongoing progress in digital health and inter-professional working, it is hoped that diabetes management will be further enhanced in terms of quality and sustainability.
