Abstract

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming educational systems by enabling data-driven decision-making, personalized learning, and adaptive instructional strategies. As educational institutions increasingly integrate AI into teaching and learning processes, understanding its role in curriculum development has become essential for improving educational quality and preparing learners for future workforce demands. However, empirical evidence regarding educators' perceptions and institutional readiness for AI-based curriculum development remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the adoption of AI-based curriculum development in higher education and to examine its perceived impact on curriculum quality, teaching effectiveness, and student engagement. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted among higher education faculty members and curriculum developers using a structured questionnaire. The survey collected information on AI literacy, perceived usefulness, institutional support, technological readiness, and the adoption of AI-based curriculum development. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed to evaluate the relationships among the study variables. Results: The findings demonstrated that AI literacy, perceived usefulness, institutional support, and technological readiness were significant predictors of AI-based curriculum development. Participants reported that AI-supported curriculum design enhanced personalized learning pathways, improved curriculum alignment with learning outcomes, facilitated continuous assessment, and promoted data-informed educational decision-making. Despite these benefits, concerns regarding data privacy, algorithmic bias, inadequate infrastructure, and limited professional training were identified as major barriers to AI implementation. Conclusion: AI-based curriculum development has considerable potential to modernize educational systems by supporting adaptive, learner-centered, and evidence-based curriculum design. Successful implementation requires strategic institutional investment, faculty development, ethical governance, and robust digital infrastructure. The findings provide practical insights for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers seeking to integrate AI technologies into future educational frameworks while ensuring equitable and responsible implementation.
