Buddhism and Environmental Protection: An Approach to Sustainable Development in Vietnam
Main Article Content
Abstract
Environmental protection and sustainable development represent defining global trends, to which Vietnam actively subscribes. Achieving sustainability necessitates the collective mobilization of all societal sectors, including religious organizations. As an inherently engaged spiritual tradition, Buddhism has consistently prioritized ecological preservation and sustainable practices throughout both historical and contemporary eras. This commitment is manifested not only in practical actions but also deeply embedded within the philosophical doctrines of the Buddhist tenets. Historically evolving alongside the Vietnamese nation, Buddhism continues to make substantial contributions to the country's modern socio-economic progress through eco-friendly initiatives. This article analyzes the eco-philosophical dimensions of Buddhist doctrines, examines the historical and contemporary contributions of Vietnamese Buddhism to environmental governance, and proposes strategic solutions to further amplify the role of this religion in Vietnam’s sustainable development agenda.
