From Satire to Subversion: "Mesh Heck" and the Architecture of Participatory Digital Warfare in Palestine

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the Palestinian digital satire platform "Mesh Heck" ("Not Like That") as a pivotal agent of counter-public formation and participatory digital warfare. Employing an integrated theoretical framework combining framing theory, critical humour studies (with a focus on humour support and failed humour), and the nascent concept of participatory digital warfare, the researcher conducts a qualitative content analysis of 214 Telegram posts published during the 2023 Palestinian teachers' strike. Moving beyond a descriptive framing analysis, this paper theorises “Mesh Heck’s” operational logic in the context of "dual repression"—simultaneous digital surveillance by the Israeli occupation and the Palestinian Authority (PA). The findings detail the platform's strategic use of human-interest (22.6%) and economic-consequence (21.8%) frames, its systematised satirical labelling (e.g., "Authority of Shame"), and its hybrid modality that merges evidentiary journalism with memetic ridicule. Crucially, the study positions "Mesh Heck" not merely as a humorous page but as a key infrastructure for grassroots-mobilised participatory digital warfare, contrasting it with state-mobilised models observed in other conflicts (e.g., in Ukraine). It argues that the platform facilitates a form of "calculated impoliteness" and delegitimisation that recruits its audience to a digital front against PA authority, thereby functioning as a dynamic, resilient counter-public sphere. This research contributes to media studies by deepening the theoretical understanding of digital satire's role in intra-societal conflict and outlining a model of resistance specific to contexts of fragmented sovereignty and dual repression.
