Integrating Cultural Heritage into Sustainable Business Models: Economic, Legal and Social Dimensions of Heritage-Led Development

Abstract

The Institutional Recognition Is Core To The Development Of The Global Image And The Perceived Worth Of Cultural Heritage Sites. Although A General Belief Is That UNESCO Inscription Increases Long-Term Sustainability, There Is Limited Empirical Research On The Issue Of The Relationship Between Recognition Timing And Performance Of The Sites. Based On The Dataset Of 1,223 Sites In 166 Countries (UNESCO World Heritage: Updated 2024) The Nomination Year Was Used As A Measure Of Institutional Maturity, Whereas The Site Rating Was Used As A Measure Of Perceived Performance. Temporal Dynamics Were Measured By Using Descriptive Statistics, Comparison Across Decades, And Pearson Correlation Analysis. The Results Reveal The Moderate Negative Correlation Between Nomination Year And Rating (R = -0.41), Where Out Of 100% Of The Rating Variance Is Explained By The Inscription Timing. There Were Always Higher Average Ratings On Sites Inscribed Earlier Than Cohorts That Were More Recent. These Results Would Suggest That Performance On Institutional Maturity Would Be Linked To Reputational Stabilization And Long-Lasting Appraisive Power, Even Though, Inscription Could Not Be Able To Maintain The Performance Consistently Itself. The Role Of Formal Recognition Addition To The Regular Monitoring And Preventive Management Is Highlighted In The Assessment. The Next Studies Should Also Incorporate Longitudinal And Multidimensional Indicators In Order To Understand The Processes Of Integration Of Institutional Recognition And Long-Term Heritage Sustainability.
