Assessing the Opportunities and Challenges of Integrating Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools in Higher Education Institutions

Abstract

GenAI applications, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Claude AI, etc., are changing how HEIs teach, learn, research and administer. These AI-based applications are providing new ways to create personalized curricula, provide assessments, assist students with their academic writing, and inform institutional decisions. However, like many emerging technologies, the use of GenAI presents several issues concerning academic integrity, ethics, data protection, faculty preparedness, and institutional policy. Therefore, the effective incorporation of AI technology will require an equal consideration of the positive aspects of its integration and the negative. The aim of this research is to identify the opportunities and challenges related to the integration of GenAI into Private Universities in India. A survey based on a quantitative approach was used where 201 participants were randomly sampled from five private universities using a stratified sampling method. Data analysis was conducted by employing IBM-SPSS statistical package. Descriptive statistics, Reliability Analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis, Correlation Analysis, Multiple Regression Analysis, Independent Sample T Test, One Way Anova and Chi-Square Analysis were used to analyze the interrelationship among Institutional Readiness, Perceived Usefulness, Ethical Concerns, Technological Infrastructure and AI Adoption. It is anticipated that the results will show that institutional support and perceived usefulness along with technological infrastructure positively affect AI adoption; however, ethical concern and lack of training negatively affects it. Additionally, this research offers a strategic framework for creating Responsible AI Implementation Policies that can facilitate innovation while maintaining Academic Quality and Ethical Standards.
