Far-fetched Metaphor in Arabic Poetry According to Classical Arab Critics

Abstract

This research aims to clarify the stance of classical Arab critics regarding the "far-fetched metaphor". To achieve this objective, the study employs a descriptive-analytical approach. It begins by defining metaphor and explaining its aesthetic function and expressive role in conveying ideas and meanings. The research then outlines the historical evolution of metaphor, tracing its shift from the simplicity and clarity found in early Arabic poetry to the obscurity and complexity characteristic of some poetry from the Abbasid era. Subsequently, the study identifies the parameters and quality standards for metaphors as established by critics. It then reviews the diverse perspectives held by critics concerning the far-fetched metaphor. Finally, the research concludes by summarizing the key findings.
