Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of multisensory teaching approaches in special education classrooms. Multisensory instructional strategies integrate visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile learning experiences to support diverse learners and enhance academic engagement. A mixed-method research design was employed to investigate the influence of multisensory instruction on students’ academic performance, classroom participation, cognitive retention, and behavioral responsiveness. Data were collected from 60 students with special educational needs and 12 special education teachers using structured classroom observations, pre-test and post-test assessments, student engagement rating scales, behavioral observation checklists, and semi-structured teacher interviews. Descriptive statistical analysis and thematic interpretation were used to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data. The study assessed the role of multisensory teaching across different sensory modalities and examined its impact on reading, vocabulary, numeracy, communication, and learner participation.

The findings revealed that multisensory teaching approaches produced substantial improvements in academic performance, learner engagement, classroom interaction, and behavioral regulation. Students who participated in sensory-integrated instructional activities demonstrated higher levels of attentional focus, task completion, collaborative learning, and conceptual understanding. The results suggest that multisensory pedagogy can serve as an effective and inclusive educational framework when implemented systematically and supported by appropriate instructional resources. However, its successful application depends on teacher preparedness, curriculum flexibility, institutional support, and access to multisensory materials. The study concludes that multisensory instruction significantly enhances educational outcomes for learners with special needs by providing multiple pathways for learning and participation. Therefore, educators, parents, and policymakers should promote the thoughtful integration of multisensory strategies into inclusive learning environments to strengthen students’ academic development and overall educational experiences.
