Skill Development as a Catalyst for Women Empowerment: A Socioeconomic Analysis of Women Beneficiaries in Upper Assam

Abstract

Women’s empowerment has emerged as a fundamental prerequisite for inclusive socioeconomic development, particularly in regions where gender disparities continue to restrict access to education, employment, financial resources, and decision-making opportunities. Skill development programmes have been increasingly recognized as strategic interventions capable of enhancing employability, income generation, entrepreneurship, and social participation among women. In Upper Assam, where women encounter persistent challenges related to workforce participation, financial dependence, limited livelihood opportunities, and social constraints, skill enhancement initiatives have gained significance as instruments of empowerment. This study examines the socioeconomic impact of skill development programmes on women beneficiaries in Upper Assam by analyzing their influence on financial autonomy, employability, productivity, workforce participation, and overall empowerment. The study further explores the transformative role of skill acquisition in strengthening women’s economic resilience, improving living standards, and enhancing social recognition. By investigating the experiences of women who have participated in various government-supported and institutional skill development schemes, the research provides insights into the effectiveness of these programmes in promoting sustainable empowerment. The findings are expected to contribute to policy formulation, programme design, and strategic interventions aimed at fostering gender-inclusive development and strengthening women’s socioeconomic status in the region.
