Artificial Intelligence and Language Learning: Transforming Motivation, Engagement, and Achievement in Higher Education
Main Article Content
Abstract
The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies has significantly transformed educational practices worldwide, particularly in language learning environments. AI-powered tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, virtual assistants, and generative AI applications provide learners with personalized learning experiences, immediate feedback, and increased opportunities for autonomous learning. This study investigates the impact of AI-based language learning technologies on students’ motivation, engagement, and language achievement in higher education institutions. A mixed-methods research design was employed involving undergraduate students majoring in English language studies. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires and achievement tests, while qualitative insights were obtained through interviews and classroom observations. The findings reveal that AI-supported learning environments significantly enhance learners’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, increase participation in language-learning activities, and contribute to improved academic performance. Furthermore, AI technologies facilitate individualized learning pathways that accommodate diverse learner needs and preferences. The study concludes that the effective integration of AI systems into language education can support the development of communicative competence, learner autonomy, and sustained motivation. The results provide important implications for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers seeking to modernize foreign language instruction through innovative technological solutions..
